It was printed using a combination of letterpress and digital techniques. Papers include handmade abaca sheets from the Morgan Conservatory in Cleveland, Ohio, and Japanese Mino Washi from Paper Connection International. The book structure used is a zhen xian bao, or Chinese thread book. This structure was traditionally used to store tools and patterns for needlework\"--Colophon. ; Four-panel artist book opens in two halves, each half with a shallow box tray (and hinged cover panel with inset illustration) containing paper sheets folded and assembled to create four layers topped with eight folded paper flower structures arranged in two uniform columns of four. The paper flower blossoms open individually to reveal one of a series of letterpress-printed prompt questions targeting racial and ethnic identity (chiefly Asian-American), then pull open further in pairs to show a different chronological portrait of the artist marked with a faceted identity label. A third layer showing a block of autobiographical text in letterpress on one of four numbered leaves then surfaces when groups of four blossoms are pulled further apart, and a fourth layer hidden beneath all eight flowers in each tray shows one half of a composit portrait illustration of the artist. ; In purple cloth ; letterpress titles on pale turquoise green paper labels inset over gold flower brocade fabric on cover and spine ; box trays lined and covered in gold brocade fabric ; colophon beneath hinged flap on rear panel. ; \"The Accretion of Identity explores various ways in which individual identity is developed. We might assume that identity is largely self-determined, but many factors, some easily discernible and others hidden from view, go into the process of defining who we are. The persona we embrace as our own is not solely made up of conscious choices but is instead a constant process of adaptation to our surroundings. For people of color there is an added layer of external expectations and assumptions that must be confronted. Family, community, and everyday interactions with strangers all influence our continually evolving sense of self in both overt and subtle ways. I took my own identity for granted as a somewhat finished process until the pandemic changed almost everything about everyday life. In this new environment, could I continue to be the exact same person that I was before? Pandemic times forced me to consider my sense of self with fresh eyes and to notice how tightly the past and the present are inextricably intertwined\"--Artist statement from Flying Fish Press website (accessed August 22, 2023). ; Baylor's copy is number 25 of 30 and is signed by the artist."},{"label":"Date","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:2022"},{"label":"Publisher","value":"[Berkeley, California] : [Flying Fish Press]"},{"label":"Contributor","value":"Morgan Conservatory."},{"label":"Creator","value":"Chen, Julie."},{"label":"Title","value":"The accretion of identity"},{"label":"Subject","value":"Chen, Julie--Portraits. ; Racism--United States. ; Autobiographical memory. ; Identity (Psychology) ; Identity (Philosophical concept) ; Asian Americans--Ethnic identity."},{"label":"Custodian","value":["Baylor University - Arts and Special Collections Research Center"]}],"description":"The accretion of identity","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/digitalcollections-baylor/iiif/a6139080-44e4-42e9-9467-b50aaded81d4/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"fa-bookarts-bkk_n7433-4-c43a74-2022_001","height":3337,"width":7666,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/digitalcollections-baylor/iiif/0777218f-cfb7-4ad1-bbcb-1d3d9b30d41d/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/digitalcollections-baylor/iiif/0777218f-cfb7-4ad1-bbcb-1d3d9b30d41d","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":2048,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":3337,"width":7666},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/digitalcollections-baylor/iiif/a6139080-44e4-42e9-9467-b50aaded81d4/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/digitalcollections-baylor/iiif/0777218f-cfb7-4ad1-bbcb-1d3d9b30d41d/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/digitalcollections-baylor/iiif/a6139080-44e4-42e9-9467-b50aaded81d4/canvas/_2","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"fa-bookarts-bkk_n7433-4-c43a74-2022_002","height":3337,"width":4156,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/digitalcollections-baylor/iiif/26a75307-14af-4ac9-bcb7-69c493d7e405/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/digitalcollections-baylor/iiif/26a75307-14af-4ac9-bcb7-69c493d7e405","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"},"height":3337,"width":4156},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/digitalcollections-baylor/iiif/a6139080-44e4-42e9-9467-b50aaded81d4/canvas/_2","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/digitalcollections-baylor/iiif/26a75307-14af-4ac9-bcb7-69c493d7e405/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/digitalcollections-baylor/iiif/a6139080-44e4-42e9-9467-b50aaded81d4/canvas/_3","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"fa-bookarts-bkk_n7433-4-c43a74-2022_003","height":3465,"width":2191,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/digitalcollections-baylor/iiif/e5212aa7-3105-4497-b271-ed61e1425a2a/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/digitalcollections-baylor/iiif/e5212aa7-3105-4497-b271-ed61e1425a2a","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json"},"height":3465,"width":2191},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/digitalcollections-baylor/iiif/a6139080-44e4-42e9-9467-b50aaded81d4/canvas/_3","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/digitalcollections-baylor/iiif/e5212aa7-3105-4497-b271-ed61e1425a2a/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/digitalcollections-baylor/iiif/0777218f-cfb7-4ad1-bbcb-1d3d9b30d41d/full/300,300/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/digitalcollections-baylor/iiif/logo"}
