It was first published by the Virginia Quarterly Review in the fall of 2016. The afterword was written in November of 2022 and was first published, under the title Chopping up the Gun with a selection of Corie J. Cole's paintings made for this book, in the Georgia Review in the fall of 2023.... The photograph used as a reference for the first painting -- the house that faces the start of the text -- was taken by Steve Lawson.... Everyone who worked on this book lived in the Mid Shooks Run neighborhood in Colorado Springs when the Halloween shooting took place in 2015--Colophon. ; Aaron Cohick, founder of NewLights Press, noted some years later that this long-form essay remained sadly relevant, and suggested it be a book. That book-which will be published next month-became a collaboration with the artist Corie Cole, who made finely detailed monochrome underglaze paintings of guns being chopped, melted, forged, and smithed into garden tools by Mike Martin and the good people at RAWtools. I wrote the book's afterword-another essay-after hanging around that shop, and its radiant people, and after attending a gun buyback. American Weather is, first, an artist book.
