And so although the darlin slept betune us in our bunk, Before we reach'd the land we pack'd That baby in the trunk! No sooner had we landed than Our baggage was undone, And collars, pants, and petticoats, Were thrown out one by one ; Then by the customs officer The little babe was found, And this is what the blagyard said As he dropp'd it on the ground: On the feast of great St. Patrick I had the finest time, But sure I never thought that fun Could constitute a crime! And yet a copper ran me in For breakin' some one's head, At least 'twas in the court next day I heard the charges read. The judge remark'd 'O'Flanagan, I hate to spring a gag, But really now, you must admit You've a got a frightful jag! Now tell me what you paid for that, And was it beer or gin?? No sooner had he said the word Than all the court joined in I soon got in society When I had made the cash, My wife and I were noted soon For cutting quite a dash. One day we both were asked to dine With some great millionaire, You should of seen the clothes we wore! It made the people stare. I wore a coat of green that was Exactly to my taste, My wife she wore a low necked dress Cut almost to the waist. The host at last took me aside In a pompous sort of way, I wondered what the divil such A man could have to say. Spoken He let go a string of words that came near paralyzing me. Something about 'propriety, ' 'decency, ' 'decorum, ' 'high-cock-a-lorum' and all that sort of thing, Anyway he pointed his dirty thumb over his shoulder at my wife, and whispered at the top of his voice: They told me that in summer If I would be the cheese, I ought to take my wife with me A-bathing in the seas. We went down to the sea-side and We thought we'd take a swim, Now you must know my wife is fat Whilst I am rather slim. The man who served us with our suits Was very impolite, He told us to let out a reef If we found the dresses tight. We donn'd our suits, and then we found When we were in the brine, Be jabers! I was wearin' hers And she was wearin' mine! Spoken The first big wave that came, I got all mixed up in the buttons and petticoat of the female bathing-dress. Not being a female, you see I was not calculated to wrestle with that sort of thing. As I was fast fillin' with water, I let out with both legs at once- to kind of free myself, as it were and begorra! I did free myself, for the whole business came off and started floatin' down the tide on its own account! The people on the shore pointed to it, and I said 'I don't know where it is, ' but that wasn't what they meant. I could hear their voices rising above the waves: Chorus Oh! Mister O'Flanagan, what did you pay for that? Say did you get it from Michael? Or did you buy it from Pat?
