McClellan at his request by Gen'l. Wool, but this sheet contains some additional information obtained since the original map was made; also some corrections of omissions made by mistake in the tracing of the original. ; Note: The batteries & fortifications at and about Yorktown were drawn & furnished to Lt. Col. Woodbury for the Army of the Potomac as well as other information several weeks since; also maps to Gen'l. Barnard and other staff officers of that Army; also copies of this have been made under my direction and freely given to the various Generals of Corps d'Armee, Divisions & Brigades, at their solicitations. T.J.C. ; As a general rule in advancing beyond Southwest Br. of Back River and Watts' Creek, the roads will be found blocked with felled trees wherever there is a wood, and there are many such places. Again on the northwest Br. of Back River where fordable, trees have been felled to obstruct the fords, wherever there is wood to answer. The Poquoisin River and Cheesman's Creek afford great facilities for landing troops by first taking Ship Pt. Battery of (now it is said) 16? Guns; 7 feet water is carried at low tide quite up to the dock seen on the head of Poquosin and 11 feet up to head of Cheeseman's Creek, as I am informed by those who have run their Schooners up to bring out timber and wood. If the army advanced from, say Warwick C.H. to occupy across to Back Crk. our supplies could be sent up by Cheeseman's Creek, supposing Ship Pt. Battery taken. In advancing beyond Howard's Bridge earthworks have it is believed, been thrown up in various places, but as their precise localities and number are not known, they have been put down on the map indefinitely. The object of these works is to fight from behind in retreat. ; Distances. From Fort Monroe to Hampton ... 3m. From Hampton to Yorktown ... 21 m. From Yorktown to Williamsburg ... 12m.
