Each 35-ton locomotive was pulling  six  boxcars  that  served  as  premier  advertising  space.  Spectators  gathered on  both  sides  of  the  four-mile  track  to  witness  the  event.  The  conductors  shook hands and boarded their respective engines.  Once the trains were in motion, these gentlemen wisely jumped out. This was the moment 40,000 people from across the region had gathered to see. At approximately 4:00 p.m. local time, locomotives No. 999 and No. 1001 collided with one another at a combined speed of 120 miles per hour. Seconds later, the eruption of both engines’ boilers propelled hot shrapnel into the crowds, killing three and wounding even more.
