Hills - Very broken near the Mississippi, gradually becoming less difficult towards Pearl River, covered with growths of Cane, Magnolias, Oak, Poplar, Persimmons &c., well cultivated. Soil - In the Mississippi bottoms, alluvial, soft in the wet season, rich growing cotton generally, but corn since the war. Productions - Corn, Cornfodder, Cattle and Hogs in considerable quantities. Roads - Dirt, well worked, generally following the ridges. Streams - Narrow, steep banks, sandy bottoms, occasionally quick-sand; those in the high lands fail during the dry season. In the alluvial districts and Big Black muddy bottoms, impassable without bridging. Fords - but few on Big Black River, Messinger's and Antibank's best, Bed of stream treacherous.
