Engineer Charles Schlagel, a Des Plaines resident, stands holding a baby on the far left of the photo. In the early 20th century, the Chicago & North Western roundhouse near River Road and Ellinwood Avenue was the best spot for train watching. Locomotive engines pulled onto the roundhouse turntable and children gathered to watch as crewmen turned the engine around for its return trip to Chicago. Sometimes, the crew invited their young audience to hop in the cab or hang onto the side of the coal tender for the short ride from the roundhouse to the Des Plaines station where the engine reconnected with its cars."},{"label":"Rights Statement","value":"COPYRIGHT NOT EVALUATED: http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/CNE/1.0/.
