Nov. 14, 1823\n
\n-\n

\nMr. Cellini has come to see me on behalf of Madame Sm---, My dear Monsieur Rosati, to consult with me about her intention, which she revealed to him, to give up all her worldly goods for the good of the Religion. It would be to your Congregation that the donation would be made, if I approve it and you give your consent. The property of this Lady consists of beautiful and considerable lands, about thirty slaves, and personal chattel decently amounting to animals, tools, household furniture, etc. The single condition she would like to make would be her own maintenance, a little like what the good Madame Hayden did at St. Thomas in Kentucky. ---This arrangement would be softened during the donor's lifetime so as not to cause too much of an outcry. She would begin only by giving by public act a plot of land that is 8 by 40 arpens, beautifully surrounded and cultivated. She would rent all her negroes to Mr. C. on the condition that she be lodged and fed on the land by him. ---I would like to add that she would have for her maintenance the 10th of the net revenue of the harvests.---The rest she would dispose of by a closed and holographic testament, well-cemented. \n

\n-\n

\nWithout doubt, this arrangement would be viewed badly by the world. The collateral heirs will cry at the top of their lungs. Nevertheless, as she has already done much for their benefit, as she owes them nothing, as all that she owns is the fruit of her own industry, and as it is she herself, without any suggestion, who wants to make this usage of her property, I think we let them cry and her do it, in view of the great advantages which must come to the Religion.
"}]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/depaul/iiif/300cb040-8bc1-4ca5-ba64-d6c3770a8a88/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}},{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/depaul/iiif/8b8ce743-b9d7-4922-bc85-be28117129a7/canvas/_2","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"DuBourg_18231114_2","height":3300,"width":2550,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/depaul/iiif/fd286e35-5313-470c-98c3-018757a4182c/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/tif","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/depaul/iiif/fd286e35-5313-470c-98c3-018757a4182c","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":1024,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":3300,"width":2550},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/depaul/iiif/8b8ce743-b9d7-4922-bc85-be28117129a7/canvas/_2","metadata":[{"label":"Translations","value":"Yet, My dear Monsieur Rosati, in a matter of rather high consequence, it is necessary to shore up the results. Do not get upset over certain arguments which I believe I must make. The Curates will never give anything if one rich Congregation, as yours will be, is exempt from contribution. And what will the Bishopric be based upon?
