There is no better way in the whole country to spread respect for our Religion than to see such establishments sustained, without public funds, by the zeal and work of the priests. Many times, the Protestant ministers have been tasked with imitating these good Works, but although powerfully supported, they have always failed, to the extent that the Protestants themselves confess that the priests alone have a solid and lasting means of instructing the youth. By preference, they entrust their children to the priests, and they call for us from all the towns in the surrounding area. The ministers have duped many by claiming that the Catholic priests are trying to keep the people ignorant. At present, the facts speak for themselves so loudly that this falsehood falls back on their heads with a terrible weight. If our very Honored Father wishes the College to continue, it is to be hoped that we are able to find in France the missing parts for the physical apparatus or that we can find a new one. The parish gives nothing.\n
\n-\n

\nHalf a league away is the Mill of the Bishop; there are about 70 arpents. This year we have spent 2000 francs to improve it. It can generate 1000 francs of profit a year. Four leagues east of the Seminary, along the Mississippi River, is another of our plots, containing 500 arpents. The land is very fertile; about 100 arpents are cultivated; by fault of the tenant, it is not profitable. We need to wait two years before we can draw some revenue from it, then it will give sufficient returns.\n

\n-\n

\nAt 37 ½ degrees to the N.E. of the Seminary is St. Genevieve, a French village and parish. There is a beautiful Church to St. Genevieve (in stone) there – the priest’s house is rather large, but old, and 50 arpents of very good land, all cultivated. The inhabitants paid us the deed of sale for this property. The revenues are made up of an annual tax of 50 sous per head on each inhabitant, pew rentals, and the letting of 150 arpents. These revenues include the Casuel, which amounts to 2500 or 3000 francs each year.
