\nI have returned from the interior of Lafourche, My dear Monsieur Rosati. --- I have visited the parishes of the Assumption and St. Joseph, with which I have been very pleased. I have confirmed 365 people there. MM. Pottini and Rosti are doing very well and give much satisfaction. The first gains in influence and experience every day, and has reduced to silence several important messieurs of the administration that were opposed to him. --- Mr. Tichitoli, unlike his two Confrères, enjoys perfect health. He has firmly decided to cure himself of his childishness, and I believe that he will try to do so in good faith, [but] I do not know if success will follow his efforts. Of the rest of these Mess., they seem to me very edifying, very united, and very faithful to their rules.\n

\nWe have taken care, with the good Mr. Bigeschi (whom I consider as one of the others, and certainly not the worst), of the interests of your Cong. in Louisiana, where I regard as indispensable that you at least have an Establishment -- And I remain convinced that it is needed in Lafourche and Assumption. --- 1st because this quarter is inhabited in general by good and excellent Christians. 2nd because it alone in the State -- based on the size and variety of its population -- may hope to produce priests for the Diocese. 3rd because it is in the center of Louisiana and easily accessed --- three advantages that it has over all the others, particularly over Opelousas. There are at this moment around 140 arpens there, with some buildings in good shape, which I am seeking (according to these Messieurs) to purchase, as I am able to have it at a very good price and on terms that I would like. This land is badly ruined by an inextirpable root, native to this climate, called Coco, and consequently it is not worthwhile to cultivate it for anything other than an orchard or, in certain places, vegetable gardens. But being next to the Church's land, it will be very valuable to us: 1st for establishing a School of Sisters, which can then become a nursery--- 2nd for creating large pastures for the animals--- 3rd for making our Establishments, absolutely independent of the Church's land, on which we then could grow good crops of cotton or sugar. This final plot of land is around 200 arpens in area, part woodland, like the other. Later, there will be the ability to expand as much as we like on the other side of the Church's land.\n\n-\n
\nHere are my ideas on this: if it is true that you are to receive $4000 for a Church, I would encourage you, as I have advised you many times, to consecrate $1000 of it to this project, which, with your workers and the aid of your Congregation, would suffice --- the other $3000 I would advise you to put toward the purchase of 3 families of Negroes and to send them as soon as possible to begin clearing and cultivating the land under the direction of Mr. Bigeschi. Rest assured that in 3 or 4 years, if each year you use the revenue to augment your workshop, you will be masters of a revenue of $3 or $4000, which is likely to gradually increase. In so doing, you will make yourself self-sufficient and give yourself the means of doing, in time, an infinite amount of good in Upper, as in Lower, Louisiana. --- Reflect on the above.
