A caption for the image reads, \"The First Church of Christ [Unitarian] Lancaster, Massachusetts, was constituted by a covenant in 1653.  It was the first church built between Sudbury and the Connecticut River.  In 1658 the Indians descended upon the town and burned every house, including the meeting house.  Eighteen years later, in 1676, the Indians again repeated their destruction, when the second church met the same fate as its predecessor. The present structure, the fifth to be erected (depicted below), was designed by the famous American architect, Charles Bulfinch, in 1816, and is believed by many to be one of his best works. The brick colonnade of the porch is a striking feature and has been copied by modern architects, as has the cupola. The high pulpits, once so characteristic of Colonist churches, is exceedingly beautiful.
