Mrs. Coburn confessed and asked forgiveness of the congregation. This item is a public apology by Mrs. Coburn admitting to her drunkenness and asking forgiveness. Parishioners were disciplined by the congregation in instances of intemperance (excessive drinking), adultery or fornication outside marriage, and other breaches of their duties as members of the Christian community. Punishment in such cases usually consisted of censure — a temporary restriction from attending services and participating in church business — until the guilty party made a formal confession or request for forgiveness."},{"label":"Genre/Form","value":["Records (Documents)"]},{"label":"Subjects","value":["Church discipline"]},{"label":"Geographic Coverage","value":["Sturbridge (Mass.)"]},{"label":"Names","value":["Congregational Church (Sturbridge, Mass.)"]},{"label":"Creator","value":["Coburn, Sarah"]},{"label":"Reference Number","value":"RG5194"},{"label":"Collection","value":["Sturbridge, Mass.
