As of the decade prior to 1947, we have watched it go to rack and ruin.” -Alfred Mansfield Brooks' caption for presentation.\n\nBy the mid-1940s when plans were unveiled showing the path Route 128 would take as it came over the Annisquam River, the White-Ellery House was in poor condition as can be seen in this photograph. In 1947, the City of Gloucester took the house by eminent domain and sold it to the Cape Ann Museum for one dollar with the proviso that it be moved immediately out of the way of the approaching highway.
