This study examines how women publicly narrate failures of informed consent in the context of hysterectomy, and how those failures are intertwined with medical misogyny, racialized power, and feminist bioethics epistemic injustice (Scully, 2023). Drawing on 413 reader comments posted in response to Rachel Gross’s December 2, 2024 New York Times article, “You had a hysterectomy. What did the doctor leave behind?,” we employ reflexive thematic analysis (Braun & Clarke, 2024, 2021), an abductive process that takes into account researcher positionality within a feminist bioethics framework. We read the comments as situated narratives that critique how clinicians frame options, disregard women’s expressed wishes, and neglect post-operative care, especially around surgical menopause and hormone replacement therapy. Three interrelated themes emerged: (1) medical misogyny, distrust, and the dismissal of women’s voices; (2) paternalism over partnership in surgical decision-making; and (3) violations of ethical standards during the informed consent process, including last-minute “choices” on the operating table and absent follow-up care. Our analysis shows that informed consent, as currently practiced, often reinforces rather than disrupts patriarchal and racialized hierarchies in healthcare.
