When under stressful conditions such as illness, or scarce resources, mTOR activity can decrease, leading to decreased cell growth. In some cases, hyperactive mTOR activity can lead to progression in cancer. For this experiment, tissues from 2 groups of mice were sampled: a control group treated with water, and an experimental isolated group treated with DSS to simulate stress. Samples from the colon tissue were taken and run on a gel electrophoresis followed by western blotting. The western blot will reveal bands indicating the presence of proteins, with lighter bands corresponding to lower protein abundance. Due to the difficulty of detecting mTOR activity a downstream target was used. The protein of interest in this study is Phospho-S6. The western blot suggested the tissues of the mice treated with DSS showed decreased levels of Phospho-S6, compared to the control grouped mice.
