This rare habitat contains significant rare plant species and is threatened by the introduction of native exotic trees. I hypothesized that Bald Cypress encroachment reduces growth rates of native hardwoods through interspecific competition for sunlight, nutrients, and space. I cored 24 trees across two sites: one with Bald Cypress and native white oaks (Quercus lyrata, Q. michauxii, Q. alba), and another with only native hardwoods. Using increment borers, I collected tree cores to analyze growth ring patterns, and measured tree diameter at breast height (DBH). Results indicate that white oaks in the cypress-occupied site had smaller, condensed growth rings compared to those in the cypress-free site, suggesting potential competition-induced growth suppression. In contrast, Bald Cypress exhibited stable growth rates. This study highlights the ecological consequences of introducing native exotic species and provides insight into habitat conservation for at-risk ecosystems.
