However,\ndue to logging practices and fire suppression, this ecosystem has drastically declined. In coastal\nlongleaf areas, best management practices have been better researched and established, but\nmontane areas have not been as thoroughly studied, especially with respect to supporting the\nunderstory community. Our research builds upon a study conducted fifteen years ago, which\ncompared and analyzed the understory flora biodiversity found across stands with differing\nmanagement history on Berry College's campus. Using their methods, we surveyed the\nunderstory flora species present in each stand. A sample of each species was collected,\nidentified, and preserved to later be added to Berry's herbarium. Based on the results of the\nprevious study, we expect to find higher levels of biodiversity in stands that were more heavily\nmanaged, especially those with a history of fire-based management. We also expect to see an\nincrease in overall biodiversity over time as the ecosystem recovers from years of fire\nsuppression.
