Large stands of rivercane, known as canebrakes, were once a common and extensive ecosystem found in bottomland hardwood forests and along floodplains. Canebrakes served a crucial role in many indigenous communities where it was eaten, used to construct buildings, make tools, and to perform ceremonies. Rivercane provided many ecosystem services as well, including riverbank stabilization, flood prevention, and water filtration. During colonization canebrakes began to disappear rapidly. This was due to land clearing, altered burning regimes, and overgrazing by livestock. Currently, canebrakes have been reduced to 2% of their former abundance. Recently, rivercane populations have been found at Berry College. Our goal is to survey these populations to determine their extent and density to determine restoration potential. My research will be used to develop a management plan for Berry and start experimental restoration plots."},{"label":"Format","value":["application/pdf"]},{"label":"Language (DLG)","value":["eng"]},{"label":"Publisher","value":["Berry College"]},{"label":"Medium","value":["posters"]},{"label":"Extent","value":"48 x 36 inch poster"},{"label":"Holding Institution","value":["Berry College"]},{"label":"Type","value":["Text"]},{"label":"Language","value":["English"]},{"label":"Major","value":["Environmental Science"]}],"description":"Arundinaria gigantea (rivercane) Surveys and Future Management Plans at Berry College","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/berry/iiif/5f3f800a-5156-407e-a2e2-da65a24ceb80/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"GravesAlexia_2025_Poster-1","height":5400,"width":7201,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/berry/iiif/ceeeaf1b-5585-4a59-9839-329d660c4ab4/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/berry/iiif/ceeeaf1b-5585-4a59-9839-329d660c4ab4","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":2048,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4]}]},"height":5400,"width":7201},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/berry/iiif/5f3f800a-5156-407e-a2e2-da65a24ceb80/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/berry/iiif/ceeeaf1b-5585-4a59-9839-329d660c4ab4/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/berry/iiif/ceeeaf1b-5585-4a59-9839-329d660c4ab4/full/300,300/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/berry/iiif/logo"}
