Glucose is vital for the\ndevelopment of the foal through gestation. As the foal ages gestationally, its glucose\nrequirements increase, requiring the dam to consume and produce more glucose to support\nboth the foal and her own needs. The objective of the study was to measure glucose\nconcentrations in the last days of gestation to detect relevant patterns. Free Style Libre\nGlucose Monitors were validated with an oral glucose tolerance test and showed a high\ncorrelation (r = 0.93) with the glucose laboratorial analysis. After validation, the monitors\nwere placed on three broodmares seven days prior to the expected foaling date. A full set of\nglucose data was successfully collected from three mares for three days prior to parturition.\nThe glucose daily average, area under the curve, and daily feeding glucose peak were also\ndetermined. Statistical analysis was performed using ANOVA and a p-value <0.05 was\naccepted as a statistical difference. There was no statistical difference on the days prior to\nparturition in average glucose or area under the curve. However, the daily feeding glucose\npeak was affected (P = 0.026) by the day. There was a tendency for the mares to peak\nsignificantly on the day prior to parturition versus days two and three. These results show\nchanges in glucose with a small sample group.
