This fungus is in a symbiotic relationship with the fescue, yet is toxic to livestock that consume it. Specifically, impaired fertility has been documented in bulls grazing endophyte infected fescue. Bulls are raised for natural breeding and collection of semen for artificial insemination, so reduced fertility is detrimental to the cattle industry and the livelihood of breeders. Although the physiology of bull reproduction is not entirely understood, trace mineral concentrations are thought to play a significant role. Therefore, our research aimed to assess the effects of a trace mineral supplement on common predictors of reproductive success in bulls grazing endophyte infected tall fescue. Yearling bulls received Multimin 90 (n = 5), an injectable trace mineral supplement, or an equivalent volume of saline (n = 5) at weaning (average 223.5 d of age) and again 90 days later. At an average of one year of age, a breeding soundness exam (BSE) was performed and blood was collected to determine mineral content. Only three of the ten total bulls passed the BSE. There was no effect of treatment on reproductive parameters examined, although there was a tendency for the bulls receiving Multimin 90 to have fewer sperm tail abnormalities (0 vs 0.8%; P = 0.06). Further study is needed to determine if trace mineral supplementation can enhance the fertility of bulls."},{"label":"Date","value":"April 30 2025"},{"label":"Date (Filter)","value":"D:30 M:04
