This poster examines student leadership in sustainability transitions through solar advocacy at Berry College, which spends over $3 million annually on electricity and relies on a fossil fuel–heavy energy mix. Drawing on scholarship in higher education leadership and sustainability change management, this project asks: How do student voices influence institutional sustainability initiatives? Through campus energy research and peer comparison, the study examines whether students act as genuine policy entrepreneurs or are symbolically included in ways that limit meaningful influence. Findings suggest student leadership is most effective when it is data-driven, coalition-based, aligned with institutional priorities, and embedded within formal governance structures. Efforts that solicit student input without decision-making authority or institutional support risk disempowering the very leaders they seek to engage.
