Parveena suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) following the death of her first husband who was killed in the crossfire between militants and Indian security forces, and her abusive second marriage to a man who physically beat her. She was often thrown out of her house in the middle of the night and forced to contend with Indian security forces and police in a militant-prone neighborhood under curfew. For the past two years, she has been suffering from headaches, physical pain, and hot flashes. She feels this is related to her stress, anxiety, and depression. Thousands of Kashmiris suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety following decades of violent insurgency, counterinsurgency, and militarization that began in the early 1990s.
