The Hell courtesan was a famous courtesan from the red light district in Sakai near Osaka. Her name was originally Otoboshi and she was the daughter of a Samurai. She ended up in a brothel after her father and mother were both killed and she was sold to the district. She believed her circumstances must be a punishment for a past life so she changed her name to Jigoku \"hell\" and had kimono design with scenes of hell as penance. Jigoku meets the famous Zen monk and poet named ikkyu. Jigoku learns a path to enlightment from Ikkyu who recognizes that she is special.
