A road lined with pine trees takes up the foreground and runs along the side of a wide river. On the road a group of porters carry large boxes with ornate decorations that indicate they might be connected to a festival or contain sacred objects. These decorations include fans, parasols, and gohei which are the wooden wands decorated with zigzag streamers. These are all used in Shinto rituals. Shiratori mound (Shiratorizuka) mentioned in the title is thought to be the burial site of Yamato Takeru no Mikoto, a legendary prince of the Yamato dynasty. It is said Yamato Takeru no Mikoto changed his body into a bird and flew away after burial. This is why the site is called Shiratori which means “white bird.”"},{"label":"Extent","value":"1 file ; 70.9 MB"},{"label":"Digital Origin","value":["reformatted digital"]},{"label":"Media Type","value":["image/jpeg"]},{"label":"Type of resource","value":["still image"]},{"label":"Physical location","value":"American University Library.
