A night time forest scene. The grass is high and bends slightly in the breeze and the forest in the background is rendered in silhouette. In the foreground a man faces a translucent spirit. The artist has allowed the bark of the tree in the midground to show through the spirit to demonstrate it's airy quality. The spirit is the image of a gaunt woman. The scene depicts the story of the nightly weeping rock. A pregnant woman traveling from Nissaka to Kanaya to meet her husband was attacked by thieves and murdered. Her blood fell on a nearby rock and her spirit became attached to it. From then on people could hear weeping from the rock. The print shows the moment her husband has come to meet her ghost. She gives him the baby which miraculously survived thanks to the help of the Bodhisattva Kanon. She also tells him who murdered her. The husband then sets out on the path to avenge her death."},{"label":"Date created (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1845 - D:00 M:00 Y:1846"},{"label":"Date created","value":"circa 1845-1846"},{"label":"Creator role","value":["Artist"]},{"label":"Creator","value":["Utagawa Kuniyoshi/ 歌川 国芳 (Signature: Ichiyûsai Kuniyoshi ga/ 一勇斎国芳画)"]},{"label":"Identifier - Local","value":"NE1325.U65_T6_0028"},{"label":"Extent","value":"1 file"}],"description":"Nissaka: The Nightly Weeping Rock/ 日坂: 小夜の中山夜啼石 (Nissaka: Sayononakayama yonakiishi)","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/ad3a77c6-9513-48d0-8529-8dec7701a3bc/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Nissaka: The Nightly Weeping Rock/ 日坂: 小夜の中山夜啼石 (Nissaka: Sayononakayama yonakiishi)","height":8572,"width":5798,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/ad3a77c6-9513-48d0-8529-8dec7701a3bc/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/ad3a77c6-9513-48d0-8529-8dec7701a3bc","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":2048,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4,8]}]},"height":8572,"width":5798},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/ad3a77c6-9513-48d0-8529-8dec7701a3bc/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/ad3a77c6-9513-48d0-8529-8dec7701a3bc/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/ad3a77c6-9513-48d0-8529-8dec7701a3bc/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/logo"}
