Peers are seen as spiritual advisors in Kashmir and often provide solace and comfort to those suffering from depression, sickness, or anxiety. Thousands of Kashmiris suffer from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and anxiety following decades of violent insurgency, counterinsurgency, and militarization that began in the early 1990s.
