Parveena worked with Parents for the Disappeared from 1994 until 2006 when she formed APDP, which by 2008 grew to 500-600 members throughout the state of Jammu and Kashmir. Insurgency groups in Kashmir proliferated in the early 1990s, with some fighting for the region’s independence and others for its accession to Pakistan. Violent clashes between Indian security forces and the armed insurgency have often affected the daily lives of Kashmiri civilians.
