In the lower left hand corner an elderly man enters the garden through the gate. As the title suggest this print depicts the Tale of the Bamboo cutter and Kaguya-hime. In the story an elderly bamboo cutter goes out to gather more bamboo one day and finds a baby girl inside a bamboo shoot. He takes her home and raises her with his wife. The baby is Kagyu-hime, a moon princess who has come to earth. In the story she grows up to be beautiful and attracts five suitors and even the attention of the emperor.
