Yale's St. Kitts facility uses the monkeys in stem cell research, Parkinson's disease research, alcoholism, epilepsy, gene therapy and neurodegenerative disorders. Monkeys are separated by sex and age. St. Christopher, as St. Kitts is formally known, was named after Christopher Columbus who first visited the volcanic island in 1493. The British and French fought over the island ever since the British settled in 1623. Sugar cane was planted soon after and became the island's main export and resulted in the importation of slave labor. The island is home to thousands of African vervet monkeys. Locals estimate the monkey population is nearly double the island's human population of 40,000. The monkeys were first brought over by the British as pets and soon escaped. Monkey trappers scour the island attempting to trap the green vervet monkeys. A green vervet monkey can sell up to $500 USD to overseas laboratories. Yale's St. Kitts Biomedical Research Foundation pays trappers $50-$150 depending on specific requirements for research. Local farmers bitterly complain the vervet monkeys ruin their crops and devour mangoes, cashews, and sweet potatoes."},{"label":"Topical subject","value":["Trapping","Beaches","Primates","Green Vervet Monkeys","Biomedical Research","Yale University","Sugarcane","Parkinson's Disease Research","Stem Cell Research","Monkeys","Tourism","Caribbean","Saint Kitts and Nevis"]},{"label":"Continent","value":["North and Central America"]},{"label":"Country","value":["Saint Kitts and Nevis"]},{"label":"Special Collections","value":["The Photographic Archive of Robert Nickelsberg"]},{"label":"Download Restrictions","value":["Full Asset PDF","Original Item(s)"]},{"label":"Rights Statements","value":["In Copyright"]},{"label":"Rights Statements URI","value":"http://rightsstatements.org/vocab/InC/1.0/"}],"description":"St. Kitts and Nevis, Tourists and Monkeys","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/8fd1a0c6-eed6-4788-8d72-316a4ddc5f63/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"St. Kitts and Nevis, Tourists and Monkeys","height":201,"width":300,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/8fd1a0c6-eed6-4788-8d72-316a4ddc5f63/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/8fd1a0c6-eed6-4788-8d72-316a4ddc5f63","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":512,"scaleFactors":[1]}]},"height":201,"width":300},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/8fd1a0c6-eed6-4788-8d72-316a4ddc5f63/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/8fd1a0c6-eed6-4788-8d72-316a4ddc5f63/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/8fd1a0c6-eed6-4788-8d72-316a4ddc5f63/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/logo"}
