Malik joined a militant group in 1992 and was captured three years later by the Indian Army in 1995 and held for three months in a Baramulla jail. Malik had his arms tied behind his back and was pushed off a wall and fell onto his face. He was beaten with a rifle butt to his head and lost sight in his left eye. He was released from jail with a record as a militant and since then he cannot get a government job, suffers from constant physical pain and depression, and cannot walk at night due to having lost sight in one eye. Malik goes to nearby shrines to seek solace. Indian security forces have been charged with committing numerous human rights violations.
