As the title of the series suggests this was a new kind of beauty contest that included the courtesan's literary skill as a mark of their beauty. The series was originally published in 1784 in an illustrated book format. The archives version is later printing and so the colors features are not the same are the original print run. Top Right Inscription, Hinazaru's calligraphy : I turn to look for the summer warbler singing but there is nothing/ but the moon left at dawn. Top Left Inscription, Chozan's calligraphy: The flying geese leave the spring mists behind without/ a glance—perhaps they are simply used to living in a village/ without flowers.
