The print depicts a battle scene on the banks of the river. The river takes up the upper register of the composition. In the lower register of the composition is a crowd of men battling in armor with a variety of weapons. At the center of the group are two men on horseback. The titular water birds are flying over the water in the upper right hand corner of the composition. The scene depicts the Battle of Fujigawa an event in the Genpei war of the Heian period. This battle took place in 1180 in present day Shizuoka prefecture. Minamoto no Yoritomo lead an allied force in the night to attack the Taira camp.
