Kashmiris were protesting the burning of the historic Muslim shrine in Charar-e-Sharief following a violent encounter between Kashmiri and Pakistani militants and Indian Army soldiers that resulted in the destruction of the entire town.The wooden shrine, one of Kashmir's holiest sites, was burned to the ground in 1995 during a battle between militants and Indian security forces which resulted in the displacement of thousands of residents.
