The titular character Sasaki Takatsune is seen from behind as he raced across the Uji River to aid Minamoto no Yoritomo at the 1184 Battle of Uji. Saski takatsune was military commander in the Genpei War whose family was wiped out following the Heiji Rebellion, he was spared because he was an infant. In 1180 Takatsune joined forces with Minamoto no Yoritomo against the Taira Clan.
