The main shrine, or mausoleum, was built in the 15th century and dedicated to a Kashmiri Sufi saint, Nund Rishi, and is considered one of the oldest and sacrosanct shrines of Indian Muslims. The wooden shrine, one of Kashmir's holiest sites, was burned to the ground in 1995 during a battle between militants and Indian security forces which resulted in the displacement of thousands of residents.
