An earthen bridge connects the foreground shore on the river with the village on the other side. The village can be seen by the roofs just beyond the crest of the bridge. Behind the village is a large grove of trees that rise above the rooftops. On the bridge are several pilgrims, men and women. One of the men with his back to us is carrying a Tengu mask on his back. The Tengu is a spirit in Japanese folklore that lives in the deep mountain forests and possesses great power; humans sometimes seek out the Tengu to learn magic from them."},{"label":"Extent","value":"1 file ; 68.3 MB"},{"label":"Digital Origin","value":["reformatted digital"]},{"label":"Media Type","value":["image/jpeg"]},{"label":"Type of resource","value":["still image"]},{"label":"Physical location","value":"American University Library.
