Dr. Singh is a politician and philosopher and for several years was president of the state of Jammu and Kashmir. His father, Sir Hari Singh, made the crucial decision to accede to India in 1947. The partition of the Indian subcontinent in 1947 divided the region into two independent nation states: Hindu-majority India and Muslim-majority Pakistan.
