Depicted is the back of a large wooden ship swaying in the large ocean waves. On the deck of the ship is a man holding a large black anchor and several other crewmen in a panic. Looming above the ship is a black apparition in the shape of a human with only large black eyes. It's body faces into the ocean waves. This striking scene depicts the story of Kuwana no Tokuzo, a sailor who breaks the taboo that says one shouldn't take their boat out on the last day of the year. Him and his crew face fearsome waves on the sea an eventually encounter the Umibozu, or Sea Monk, a giant mythical creature that lives in the ocean. The apparition asks Tokuzo \"Name the most horrible thing you know!\" and Tokuzo responds with \"My profession is the most horrible thing I know!\" This either confuses or satisfies the Umi Bozu and it leave Tokuzo and his crew alone."},{"label":"Date created (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1845 - D:00 M:00 Y:1846"},{"label":"Date created","value":"circa 1845-1846"},{"label":"Creator role","value":["Artist"]},{"label":"Creator","value":["Utagawa Kuniyoshi/ 歌川 国芳 (Signature: Ichiyûsai Kuniyoshi ga/ 一勇斎国芳画)"]},{"label":"Identifier - Local","value":"NE1325.U65_T6_0045"},{"label":"Extent","value":"1 file"}],"description":"Kuwana: The Story of the Sailor Tokuzō/ 桑名: 船のり徳蔵の傳 (Kuwana: Funanori Tokuzō no den)","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/30780cd7-8ba5-43eb-85bd-638f21426691/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Kuwana: The Story of the Sailor Tokuzō/ 桑名: 船のり徳蔵の傳 (Kuwana: Funanori Tokuzō no den)","height":8629,"width":5737,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/30780cd7-8ba5-43eb-85bd-638f21426691/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/30780cd7-8ba5-43eb-85bd-638f21426691","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":2048,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4,8]}]},"height":8629,"width":5737},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/30780cd7-8ba5-43eb-85bd-638f21426691/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/30780cd7-8ba5-43eb-85bd-638f21426691/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/30780cd7-8ba5-43eb-85bd-638f21426691/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/logo"}
