A man in a large blue patterned court robe stands on a series of small bridges accompanied by and elderly servant and child attendant. He leans over to view the iris flowers blooming from the pond. Ariwara Narihara was a famous courtier and waka poet, who is consider both one of the Six poetic geniuses and one of the Thirty-six poetic geniuses. His romantic escapades were recorded in the Tales of Ise, among the most influential texts form the Heian period. The print is depicted what might be the most well known scene from the Tales of Ise where Ariwara is stopped at an eight plank bridge and becomes so taken with the irises by the bridge he composes a poem for the moment. In the poem he express his longing to see his wife who he left behind at home. The poem: から衣 きつゝなれにし つましあれば はるばるきぬる たびをしぞ思 ( Karagoromo / kitsutsu narenishi / tsuma shi areba / harubaru kinuru / tabi o shi zo omou)\nI have a beloved wife / familiar as the skirt / of a well-worn robe / and so this distant journeying / fills my heart with grief (Translation by Helem McCullough)"},{"label":"Date created (EDTF)","value":"D:00 M:00 Y:1845 - D:00 M:00 Y:1846"},{"label":"Date created","value":"circa 1845-1846"},{"label":"Creator role","value":["Artist"]},{"label":"Creator","value":["Utagawa Kuniyoshi/ 歌川 国芳 (Signature: Ichiyûsai Kuniyoshi ga/ 一勇斎国芳画)"]},{"label":"Identifier - Local","value":"NE1325.U65_T6_0042"},{"label":"Extent","value":"1 file"}],"description":"Chiryū: Ariwara Narihira at Yatsuhashi/ 池鯉鮒: 八橋 (Chiryu: Yatsuhashi)","sequences":[{"@type":"sc:Sequence","canvases":[{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/1cdeb235-b1a9-475f-9eac-a7d91f3bc74f/canvas/_1","@type":"sc:Canvas","label":"Chiryū: Ariwara Narihira at Yatsuhashi/ 池鯉鮒: 八橋 (Chiryu: Yatsuhashi)","height":8572,"width":5798,"images":[{"@type":"oa:Annotation","motivation":"sc:painting","resource":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/1cdeb235-b1a9-475f-9eac-a7d91f3bc74f/full/full/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","format":"image/jpeg","service":{"@context":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/context.json","@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/1cdeb235-b1a9-475f-9eac-a7d91f3bc74f","profile":"http://iiif.io/api/image/2/level2.json","tiles":[{"width":2048,"scaleFactors":[1,2,4,8]}]},"height":8572,"width":5798},"on":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/1cdeb235-b1a9-475f-9eac-a7d91f3bc74f/canvas/_1","metadata":[]}],"thumbnail":{"@id":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/1cdeb235-b1a9-475f-9eac-a7d91f3bc74f/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","@type":"dctypes:Image","height":500,"width":500}}]}],"thumbnail":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/1cdeb235-b1a9-475f-9eac-a7d91f3bc74f/full/500,500/0/default.jpg","logo":"https://iiif.quartexcollections.com/american/iiif/logo"}
